The Brick People is an historical novel that traces the growth of California from the nineteenth to the twentieth century by following the development of the Simons Brick Factory. The bricks that laid the foundation of modern California were manufactured by the people that ventured from Central Mexico to stoke the furnaces of industry. With an attention to historical reality blended with myth and legend, Morales recounts the epic struggle of a people who forge their destiny, along with California’s. In this fictional story rooted in factual history, two families are pitted against each other the powerful Simons and the proud Revueltas clan. The Brick People provides an authentic portrayal of the history of California and those who built it.

I am familiar with the City and street where this story takes place because I grew up there. In all fairness to the writer, I must write that for me the story was disrespectful to the people who lived in the Simons. Why was this fictional? There are people still alive that could have provided their stories. This was an opportunity to inform people that the bricks used to build Montebello and the surrounding communities were built by hard working Mexicans who were denied so many basic rights. By Mexicans who were recruited to come and then told to leave after the work was done and the depression arrived. Why does the writer spend time or interest regarding the sexual positions Mr. Simon's son thought he had to use to produce a child? Why was that even in the story? Who cares? This book missed an opportunity to tell a real story. A story to make people proud. There is no shame in what took place at the Simons, there is only shame that people do not know.

I read this book for my college class and I truly found it a great read!!
Great Story......Small part of our family history!
If you live in LA or have in the past, this is a fascinating piece of local history. It's well written and entertaining as well as informative. Best book I've read in a while.
Highly recommended for people with a serious interest
in little-known but important historical contributions
of Mexican families to the evolution
of Los Angeles architecture.
I love this book after reading it because its about my heritage and where my Mom grew up. It gives accurate accounts and describes what like life was about living in Simons. Its not a biography but it gives a good insight to the lives through the characters.
My Grandma grew up in the Brickyard, she awfton talk about her childhood , but I was to young to understand. Unfortunately my grandmother is no longer here but with this book I felt that I got an insight to was she was talking about. Simons Brickyard motebello great part of Chicano history!
